Coronavirus: Updated Risk Assessments of Children and Young People with SEND at School

Special Needs Jungle (SNJ) have written an article explaining that an updated and co-produced risk assessment (RA) needs to occur before a child or young person (CYP) with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) returns to school if they weren’t attending during the height of lockdown. The article tells us stories of when this hasn’t fully occurred and explains the current Department for Education (DfE) guidance, amongst other things regarding the RA of CYP with an EHCP.

The article acknowledges that the DfE’s guidance was updated the day after the SNJ post was published and addresses this topic.

Please note that those that are clinically vulnerable are advised to follow their specific medical advice regarding attending school, and those that are clinically extremely vulnerable, so shielding, are advised to not attend school. People with symptoms or people living with people with symptoms should self-isolate, so not attend school. For 1st May to 30th June, there will be no criminal penalty for parents that do not send their children to school as stated in the 2020 Coronavirus Act.
